LIGO Document G0900424-v5
- Among the most promising sources for observation by ground-based gravitational wave (GW) detectors is the inspiral, merger and ringdown of binary systems of black holes and/or neutron stars, known as compact binary colascence. I will describe the techniques used to search for these signals in LIGO and Virgo data, and the status of current and planned searches within the LSC and Virgo. Particular attention will be paid to multi-messenger observations, such as searches for GWs associated with gamma-ray bursts, and prospects for low-latency GW searches whose potential candidate events can be communicated to optical telescopes for followup observations.
