LIGO Document G0900537-v4
- In 2009, the LIGO-Virgo network has gravitational wave observatories of comparable sensitivity at three sites. Observation of agravitational wave by a the network permits determination of the source direction to within a few square degrees, and permits coherent consistency checks enabling the rejection of instrumental 'glitches'. The framework of Bayesian inference quantifies thesecapabilities, providing 'sky maps' of signal probability for each direction, and model selection to decide if the level of inter-site consistency renders a signal or glitch the most parsimonious explanation for any observation. Such a code will be run online for the S6/VSR2 observations, reporting within minutes of an observation if an event is classified as a candidate signal, and a confidence region on the sky that can be compared with, or even direct, the observations of electromagnetic and particle telescopes.
