LIGO Document G1000736-v1
- The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) reached "first lock" in 2000, and its initial design sensitivity in 2005. It then completed a two year run, listening for gravitational waves from neutron stars, black holes, supernovae, and the Big Bang. It will complete another run this October, after which installation of the
Advanced LIGO instrument begins. The talk will cover how LIGO works and relates to Einstein's theories, the sources it will hear (neutron stars, black holes, and more), and what the detection of gravitational waves will mean for astronomy.
