Abstract:
Deformed rotating neutron stars should generate gravitational waves in the frequency band of ground-based detectors such as LIGO and Virgo. Neutron stars observed as pulsars can be attacked with targeted gravitational wave searches which use the known rotation frequency to perform a fully-coherent template-based search. I will describe strategies for directed searches, in which the sky position of a (confirmed or suspected) neutron star is known, but no rotational ephemeris exists. Such searches can be used to search for gravitational waves from objects such as supernova remnants (e.g., SN1987A) and low-mass X-ray binaries (e.g., Scorpius X-1).
