Abstract:

The recent detection of gravitational waves from the inspiral and merger of a pair of black holes marks the initiation of gravitational wave astronomy. This follows many decades of detector development and initiates an international network of gravitational-wave observatories. This talk will provide a general introduction to the basic principles underlying gravitational waves, the emerging network of detector facilities and prospects for future development.
