Abstract:
Last year, Advanced LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) deteced two strong gravitational wave signals radiated by collisions of two heavy black holes. The aLIGO has two detectors in the United States, with a separation of 3000km, and clear signals were caught by both detectors with identical signal shapes.

This talk presents the outline of the detected events, and implications of the detections of the gravitational wave signals. It also covers the history of aLIGO development toward the first detection of signals, structures of the current aLIGO detector, and plans of future developments for the astronomy using gravitational wave signals.

Presentation at Pisa Univ on September 23, 2016
