Public lecture at the Taiwan Astronomy Museum, January 22, 2017

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) project operates two detectors that are located in the Unites States and separated by about 3000 kilometers. They recently detected gravitational waves from collisions of black holes that occurred more than one billion years ago and more than one billion light years from Earth. These signals have revealed new information about our Universe, and they have given us new insight into the validity of Einstein’s theory of General Relativity.

We will discuss LIGO’s recent observations, how the LIGO detectors measure gravitational waveforms, and prospects for future detections with the global network of gravitational wave observatories that will include the Virgo detector in Italy and the KAGRA detector in Japan.
