Significance of two-parameter coincidence

Abstract:

This note provides a way to calculate the significance of a two-parameter coincidence of a single event (time) with a Poisson process that is characterized by rate as well as an additional rank (e.g. SNR) parameter. To do so it converts the coincidence described by two parameters to a single rank statistic using an intuitive ranking and some reasonable boundary conditions.
