LIGO Document G0900557-v3
- We describe a search method for transient gravitational wave signals from rapidly rotating
neutron stars. Such signals, with time-scales of days to weeks, could be associated with known
glitches in the observed electro-magnetic (EM) spectrum of pulsars, though the exact mechanism is unknown.
The proposed search technique (based on a maximum-likelihood statistic, referred to as "F-statistic"),
aims at investigating and ultimately detecting transient signals without the need for a triggered search.
The search is a fully-coherent, multi-interferometer search for "targeted" objects (neutron stars of known
sky position and emitted EM frequency and frequency derivatives) but can be extended to objects
whose exact frequency/frequency derivatives are not precisely known ("directed" search).
