Third generation gravitational wave observatories are likely to require cryogenic test masses to improve thermal noise performance beyond aLIGO
sensitivity. At Stanford University we are exploring technologies for
cooling large silicon test masses. This includes methods for rapidly cooling the test masses to approximately 120 K (-153 C) in about 1 day for optimal duty cycle, as well as methods for maintaining the temperature in the steady state for running science mode. Results from early prototype cooling experiments will be presented, and plans for the next generation of experiments will be previewed.
