LIGO Document G1900526-v1
- The results of the prototype at stanford show that with a pressure of 30 mtorr gaseous nitrogen and a 1 mm gap between the cold shroud and the test masses we can improve the cooldown rate by a factor of 3.5, compared to radiation only cooldown.
The results of our experiments can be estimated within the 10% level of accuracy using the semi-empirical Sherman-Lees interpolation formula for heat conduction in rarefied gases.
This method for fast cooldown/warmup iterations can be of use for third generation GW obsevatories.
