Abstract:
Text:
Together, Caltech and MIT have jointly and successfully managed and operated LIGO for 25 years, through the construction of the LIGO Livingston and Hanford Observatory facilities, followed by the building and operation of the initial LIGO interferometers, and most recently the completion of the second generation Advanced LIGO interferometers. Motivated by LIGO’s scientific promise and potential to profoundly change our understanding of gravity and the universe as well as by its unique technology, Caltech and MIT have throughout LIGO’s history provided strong institutional support. LIGO offers unique opportunities for our faculty, scientists, and students on one of NSF’s most exciting and visionary projects. We remain strongly committed to LIGO Laboratory and eager to continue the Caltech-MIT partnership through the Advanced LIGO era and beyond.
