- In this paper we discuss the energy interaction between gravitational waves and laser interferometer gravitational wave detectors. We show that the energy transfer from the gravitational wave signal is strongly determined by the relative amplitude of the signal sidebands, which themselves may be modified by interferometer detuning. For a strongly
detuned interferometer in which anti-Stokes sideband dominates the interaction, we show that the detector acts as a transducer for gravitational wave energy, which is absorbed by the detector and dissipated into the environment. The same result can be obtained by interpreting the interaction from the point of view of Doppler friction. For a detuned signal recycling interferometer, we show that the dimensionless energy absorption cross section can be increased.
